Applus+ has been awarded a significant new contract with Aurizon Operations Limited, continuing their long-standing partnership with the rail freight operator. The contract involves category 6 tank inspections, as part of a comprehensive 10-year inspection program, and lower category inspections, running from September 2024 to mid-2026, and builds on the success of a stand-alone tank inspection project completed earlier this year. As part of the contract, Applus+ will manage the entire inspection process. This includes cleaning, decommissioning, and recommissioning Aurizon’s diesel storage tanks, which support their rail operations across Queensland and New South Wales.
The contract covers both Category 6 above-ground atmospheric storage tanks (AST) and lower-category horizontal tanks. Category 6 tanks, which require full out-of-service API 653 10-year inspections, will be cleaned, inspected, and recommissioned over up to two weeks per tank. In contrast, lower-category tanks will undergo external inspections without requiring removal from service, allowing Aurizon’s operations to continue uninterrupted. These inspections will take one to three days per location, offering a streamlined process for Aurizon’s fuel infrastructure.
In addition to tank inspections, Applus+ will conduct comprehensive audits of Aurizon’s facilities at each inspection site. These audits will ensure compliance with Australian Standard AS1940, focusing on health, safety, environmental, and quality (HSEQ) standards, including proper signage, access, and facility security. This added responsibility demonstrates Applus+’s expanded expertise beyond tank inspections, offering Aurizon a multi-skilled team capable of meeting broader compliance and operational needs.
The project will draw on Applus+’s teams based in Melbourne and Brisbane, with team members deployed across multiple locations throughout Australia. This nationwide effort reinforces Applus+’s ability to manage large-scale, multi-location projects while ensuring the highest quality of service.
Aurizon’s diesel storage tanks are essential for fuelling a large fleet of locomotives, which transport a range of commodities, including mining, agricultural, industrial and retail products for a diverse range of customers across Australia.
