Applus+ in Australia successfully completes offshore caisson inspection campaigns

07/05/2024

Applus+ successfully completed a thorough inspection of multiple caissons on an offshore oil & gas facility located in the North-West shelf of Western Australia. The team utilised multiple offshore inspection methods, including close visual inspection (CVI), advanced ultrasonic testing (UT), and 3D modeling and laser scanning, that ensured a thorough and safe assessment of the facility.

A four-person rope access NDT and inspection team embarked on a comprehensive inspection campaign of caissons and anchor points on an offshore facility. Their dedication to safety was evident in meticulous project planning and execution offshore.

Led by experienced professionals, the team navigated through various challenges, including adverse weather conditions and support vessel movements, without compromising on the quality or safety of their work.  The team utilised multiple advanced NDT techniques, such as 3D laser scanning for external corrosion assessment and phased array corrosion mapping for internal corrosion, which proved invaluable for the Fitness for Service (FFS) assessment.

What truly set this team apart was their diverse skill set, with three out of four inspectors holding IRATA Level 3 certification, which was key to safe and efficient access in the challenging offshore environment. The use of a rope access powered ascender not only enhanced efficiency but also bolstered rescue capabilities and reduced fatigue.

In the end, their collaborative approach, technical expertise, and experience resulted in the completion of a safe and on-budget campaign, that exceeded the expectations of the client.
