Applus+ successfully executed Eddy Current Array services for a major steel producer in Canada. The scope involved the testing of steel rolls using Eddy Current Array, an extension of our Eddy Current Testing capabilities. Eddy Current Array electronically drives a series of eddy current coils placed next to each other, activating in sequence, in a probe assembly.
The Advanced NDT Technologies team at Applus+ applied Eddy Current Array to examine conditions of 6-inch diameter steel rolls using ECA technology produced by one of our vendors. The technology utilized to support the inspection was a screening tool that is specifically designed to detect deformities such as stress corrosion cracking (SCC), cracks, and subsurface defects on assets such as tanks, pipelines, and vessels, among others.
Our team approached the client regarding Applus+’ capabilities in Eddy Current Array and secured a demonstration using the ECA technology acquired on a client’s asset. The client’s assets were 6-inch diameter steel rolls. Essentially, the demonstration developed into an inspection as our client requested our team to find one indication in the steel roll.
Not only did our team of experts locate one indication, but the team also found a second indication that the team was not notified of. Our client’s representatives were impressed with the acquired technologies utilized to perform the inspection. Most of all, they were impressed with the team’s skillset to identify indistinct asset irregularities. As a result, concrete conversations began about acquiring Applus+ services for steel roll Inspection utilizing our vendor’s ECA technologies.
A standard demonstration quickly developed into a formidable relationship between client and service provider. It is a testament to our capabilities, but more importantly, our commitment to securing the integrity of our client’s assets.
