Applus+ optimizes hydrological and meteorological monitoring in the Nechí River basin in Colombia

30/10/2024

Applus+ carried out a project to enhance the monitoring of water resources in the Nechí River basin. This project was developed as part of a mandatory 1% investment dedicated to environmental conservation initiatives. By implementing automatic hydrological and meteorological monitoring stations, Applus+ helped ensure precise and continuous tracking of natural resources in this region.

The main objective of the project was to optimize IDEAM's (Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, and Environmental Studies) monitoring capacity by replacing conventional equipment with advanced environmental monitoring technology that allows for more reliable, real-time data collection. This improvement strengthens local operational capabilities and ensures the long-term sustainability of monitored water basins.

    Key areas of the project

The project covered various action areas, enabling more efficient monitoring of water resources in the region:

    • Installation of automatic stations: Nine meteorological stations and two hydrological stations were installed at strategic locations, all equipped with automatic sensors and powered by solar energy, ensuring uninterrupted operation.
    • Real-time data transmission: The stations transmit collected data via satellite or GPRS communication, improving the frequency and accuracy of measurements. This feature enables rapid response to weather or hydrological events, enhancing predictive and preventive capabilities.
    • Technical staff training: Applus+ also provided specialized training to the client’s operational team, ensuring the correct handling, control, and maintenance of the newly installed equipment.
    • Maintenance and technical support: Preventive maintenance plans were created during the project to ensure the optimal functioning of the stations over the next two years.

    Results achieved

Implementing the automatic monitoring system in the Nechí River basin has led to significant improvements in collecting and managing hydrometeorological data. Key benefits include:

    • Improved data accuracy: The new automated equipment has reduced the margin of error in measurements, offering more precise data on water levels and weather conditions.
    • Greater responsiveness: Real-time data transmission allows IDEAM and local authorities to respond promptly to potential emergencies or extreme weather events.
    • Water resource conservation: The modernization of monitoring systems facilitates informed decision-making for watershed preservation, ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.

This project reflects Applus+ commitment to technological innovation and environmental conservation. Through its expertise in hydrological and meteorological monitoring, Applus+ has enhanced natural resource management in the region, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations while protecting water resources.
