Applus+, together with TADARSA EOLICA and ITURCEMI, have participated in the R+D project FAWIND, based on a new system of automated manufacturing for the offshore industry, relating to the marine industry. This innovative project has been co-financed by the Government of the Principality of Asturias, Spain, through the Institute of Economic Development of the Principality of Asturias (IDEPA, its acronym in Spanish) and the Science, Technology and Innovation Plan (PCTI, its acronym in Spanish) 2018-2022, and by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF, its acronym in Spanish). The approved funding for the project is € 79,783.02, with a grant of € 47,869.81 (60%).
The main objective of the project is to detect flaws in offshore structures by designing and validating a new early inspection system capable of detecting imperfections in the welding line.
Applus+ was chosen to carry out the research of non-destructive online testing techniques, including assessing the speed of inspection based on the welding, assessing the active arc inspection technique, assessing the automatisation of inspections, and assessing the reduction of repairing works resulting from the early detection of flaws.
Applus+ has carried out extensive research on the applicability and limitations of the EMAT technique (Electro Magnetic Acoustic Transducer) for the type of materials, types of welding and processes of the project. This research has led us to discard this technique, proposing other potential alternatives to find a solution that could be studied in future projects.
