The integration of battery energy storage solutions (BESS) in new photovoltaic projects or in plants that are already in operation is becoming increasingly important in the renewable energy sector. In many countries, regulations are evolving quickly to address challenges associated with solar and wind energy project deployment, such as managing intermittency and stabilizing grid frequency and voltage. By promoting BESS projects, we can boost the share of renewables while ensuring a reliable energy supply.

Pascual García, Engineering & Construction Manager for LATAM North at Enertis Applus+, highlights some of the challenges and provides recommendations for implementing hybrid solar PV and BESS systems.

Some of the challenges associated with hybrid solar and battery energy storage systems include the high initial BESS implementation costs, therefore developing suitable business models is key to ensure the expected return for investors. Additionally, in certain countries there is a lack of clarity regarding remuneration models and the uses of these systems, as well as limited data on their long-term performance and a shortage of specialized technicians. These factors can increase the perception of risk and hinder investments and financing. Moreover, the grid infrastructure must be capable of integrating large-scale BESS projects, which require real-time monitoring and control of battery charge and discharge cycles.

To effectively overcome these challenges, when a client is considering implementing a hybrid solar PV and BESS system, Enertis Applus+ recommends conducting a thorough initial evaluation of the following key factors: technical specifications, connection type, degradation expectations, future expansion strategy, available space, as well as warranty and long-term service contracts, among others.

At Enertis Applus+, we have a highly specialized team of experts who have provided solar consulting and solar engineering services for over 300 GW of renewable energy projects and 30 GWh of battery energy storage projects worldwide. Additionally, we utilize SIMUBATT+, our proprietary modeling software, which performs detailed simulations of various combinations and enables us to develop conceptual studies on the technical and economic feasibility of hybridizing different renewable technologies with BESS systems.
