Geotechnical Instrumentation and Monitoring for the Riyadh Metro

19/09/2024

Applus+ carried out geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring for the Riyadh Metro Project, Package 3, including the design of monitoring plans, supplying and installing equipment, and conducting detailed readings.

The project was executed in multiple phases: initial planning, design, equipment installation, and ongoing monitoring. Teams included engineers, project managers, field technicians, and maintenance personnel.

We utilized advanced technologies for real-time monitoring, including automated data acquisition systems and fiber optic sensors. These methods ensured accurate and timely data collection and analysis. Furthermore, our comprehensive geotechnical monitoring system was successfully integrated with the Riyadh Metro infrastructure.

Our services comprised a wide range of geotechnical monitoring instruments, such as:

    • Extensometers
    • Inclinometers
    • Tiltmeters
    • Standpipe
    • Piezometers
    • Strain Gauges
    • Load Cells
    • Vibration Control Systems

Applus+ stands out for its expertise in geotechnical instrumentation and real-time monitoring. Our automated systems provide precise data with minimal labor involvement, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

With a robust history of managing large-scale monitoring projects, Applus+ has proven expertise in delivering reliable and effective solutions. Our extensive experience and successful project track record set us apart in the industry.

Our geotechnical solutions covered different critical infrastructures and components, including:

    • North Depot and Shaft
    • 5C2 Station and Central Launching Shaft
    • Line 4’s 4G1 Station and Cut&Cover Tunnel 4.2
    • 4G2 and 4G3 Stations
    • Skyways at King Khalid International Airport

The Riyadh Metro, part of the King Abdulaziz Project for Public Transport, is a major infrastructure initiative in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It will feature six metro lines spanning 176 kilometers and 84 stations. Applus+ was contracted by the FAST Consortium (FCC, Samsung, etc.) to provide crucial structural and geotechnical control.

This project aims to reduce daily car trips by 250,000, save 400,000 liters of fuel, and reduce air pollution while accommodating 3.6 million passengers daily. Our role was vital in ensuring the stability and safety of various components within this extensive network.

Our automated monitoring system streamlined project management, reduced labor needs, and mitigated associated risks. Real-time data enabled proactive decision-making, enhancing safety and compliance while protecting third parties from potential issues.

The system is designed for ongoing monitoring and maintenance, ensuring long-term functionality and reliability.

The client commended the effectiveness of our real-time monitoring, noting that it significantly contributed to the project's successful execution and management.
