Power performance test in onshore semi-complex terrain by using Nacelle-Mounted LiDAR

    Barlovento Applus+ has been collaborating with ENEL Green Power on a research project to identify the strengths of the Nacelle-Mounted LiDAR (NML) technology for power performance testing of wind turbines in semi-complex onshore terrain.

    Nacelle-mounted LiDAR (NML) is an emerging technology for wind measurement and the characterization required during a Power Performance test. This methodology has developed rapidly in recent years and is widely accepted in the industry as a reliable and advantageous solution for offshore wind projects and onshore ones when terrain conditions are not complex. Current international standards also include the use of NML technology in flat terrain but do not consider it for complex terrain. 

    The purpose of this project was to identify the strengths of this technology in semi-complex onshore terrain.

    Barlovento Applus+ has a successful track record in using NML technology in offshore wind projects, while its experience in complex terrain conditions was limited. ENEL Green Power, one of the biggest global wind stakeholders, aimed to analyze the viability of these systems for their use in semi-complex terrain, given the advantages they bring in terms of flexibility compared to conventional methodologies. ENEL selected Barlovento Applus+ to collaborate in this relevant research project.

    First, key tasks included a detailed analysis of the terrain conditions around the wind turbine and the definition of the location of the NML on the wind turbine's nacelle in order to maximize measured data availability.

    Barlovento Applus+ provided and commissioned the NML and managed the wind measurement campaign, including data verification and results calculation during the different project stages.

    The results were compared to those obtained by conventional methodology through the meteorological mast, which is the only option currently accepted by international standards for Power Performance tests in complex terrain.

    The project's results have been very promising regarding the reliability and accuracy of NML measurements in those conditions. Relevant conclusions have also been reached regarding specific measures and considerations that need to be taken into account during the verification of measured data to ensure reliability and accuracy.
