Applus+ was engaged to utilise phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) services for CIVMEC's FMG Cloudbreak mine tank construction site, to ensure structural integrity and compliance. The use of PAUT expedited inspections, provided immediate results, improved data accuracy, and minimized risks associated with traditional radiography, resulting in no downtime to the client.
In December 2023, CIVMEC, contracted by FMG, undertook the fabrication, construction, and installation of a fully welded steel water tank at FMG's Cloudbreak iron ore mine in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Applus+ played a pivotal role in this project by providing two Advanced NDT Technicians to conduct PAUT of the tank's welded horizontal and vertical joints, in compliance with API 650 standards.
The decision to use PAUT over traditional radiographic testing (RT) stemmed from logistical concerns associated with assembling radiography equipment at the remote site, and the need to avoid downtime for the CIVMEC workforce due to exclusion zones required for Radiographic Testing.
