Applus+, through its company Applus+ Energy S.L., has carried out as an ESCO company several energy efficiency improvements in the thermal energy generation and distribution systems of the pharmaceutical company Uriach, specifically at its Palau Solità i Plegamans plant, in Barcelona.
On the one hand, the production and distribution of hot water has been optimised through the installation of a new condensing boiler, which allows instantaneous yields of over 100% to be obtained by exploiting the latent heat of the combustion fumes in the form of water vapour. An electronically controlled burner has also been incorporated, with a frequency variator and sensor control. Hot water distribution has also been improved with hydraulic disconnection through a distribution manifold, separating the primary and secondary circuits. Moreover, frequency inverters have been installed to adjust the operation of the pumps in the secondary and tertiary circuits according to current needs, and two-way valves have been set up in all consumers, allowing the flow rate to decrease as the number of active consumers is reduced.
On the other hand, in cold water distribution, frequency inverters have been implemented to adjust the operation of the pumps in the secondary and tertiary circuits according to the needs of the moment. Two-way valves have also been set up in all consumers, allowing the flow rate to decrease as the number of active consumers is reduced. Moreover, the hydraulic disconnection has been achieved through a distribution manifold, separating the primary and secondary circuits.
Thus, the total savings achieved in Uriach’s air conditioning system is 13% in electricity consumption and 28% in gas consumption.
To implement this energy efficiency improvement project, APPLUS ENERGY SL has invested €419,955.79. Thanks to the energy savings achieved, APPLUS ENERGY SL has received a grant of €115,955.79 from the National Energy Efficiency Fund. This line of aid, which is coordinated by the Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) and managed by the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN), receives co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with the aim of achieving a cleaner and more sustainable economy.
