Applus+ in Kuwait commences ambient air quality monitoring at Wafra Oil Field

21/01/2025

Applus+ in Kuwait has commenced an ambitious four-year project to monitor ambient air quality at the Wafra Oil Field, a critical site in the Partitioned Neutral Zone between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. It is known for its significant oil production and shared management by both nations. This initiative, awarded under the stringent regulations of the Kuwait Environment Public Authority (KEPA), underscores Applus+ commitment to enhancing environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance in the energy sector.

The project involves the deployment of state-of-the-art air quality monitoring systems, including fixed monitoring stations and mobile units, to ensure continuous and comprehensive data collection. Key meteorological parameters such as air temperature, wind speed, solar radiation, and relative humidity will be tracked around the clock, with data logged and reported in real time to a secure online platform. These parameters are critical in understanding pollutant dispersion, assessing environmental impact, and optimizing operational strategies to mitigate adverse effects. This ensures adherence to KEPA Decision No. 8/2017 and other relevant environmental standards.

Strategically positioned cameras will bolster the security of the monitoring stations and facilitate remote inspections, enhancing operational efficiency by reducing the need for on-site visits and minimizing downtime. Rigorous quality assurance programs will validate the accuracy and reliability of the data, ensuring its credibility for regulatory and operational purposes. These measures reflect KEPA’s broader vision to establish a robust national air quality monitoring network, fostering a cleaner and more sustainable future for Kuwait.

By prioritizing air quality monitoring at the Wafra Oil Field, Applus+ in Kuwait sets a benchmark for environmental responsibility in oil and gas operations. This project aligns with KEPA’s regulatory framework and enhances the field’s adherence to international environmental standards. Continuous monitoring and real-time data analysis will enable proactive responses to potential environmental concerns, ensuring operational activities remain within permissible limits.

Applus+ in Kuwait has leveraged cutting-edge technology to achieve the project’s objectives. Advanced monitoring systems are designed to operate seamlessly under harsh field conditions, including extreme heat, high dust levels, and strong winds prevalent in desert environments, ensuring reliable performance over the project’s duration. These systems are complemented by a secure online platform that provides stakeholders with real-time access to critical air quality data, facilitating transparency and informed decision-making.

This initiative reflects Applus+ unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship in the regions it operates. By contributing to KEPA’s vision of a sustainable future, Applus+ reinforces its role as a key partner in advancing environmental protection and compliance in Kuwait’s energy sector.
