Applus+ is performing non-destructive testing (NDT) at a solar-thermal power plant, deploying Eddy Current testing on piping systems and heat exchangers.
Eddy Current inspection is one of several NDT methods using the principle of electromagnetism to conduct examinations, along with Remote Field Eddy Current Testing (RFECT), Near Field Testing (NFT), and Ultrasonic Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS)
Choosing the appropriate NDT inspection method for equipment depends on the material of the tubing and the specific NDT inspection needs. For this scope of work, Applus+ performed Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) inspections and conventional Eddy Current tube inspections.
Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) is a reliable way to survey ferrous pipes and vessels through their thermal insulation and protective coatings. The proprietary system by Applus+, RTD INCOTEST™, is an excellent tool for prioritizing corrosion-under-insulation inspections. PEC supports efficient maintenance operations by screening and prioritizing further inspections and maintenance while eliminating the need for direct access.
The tubing was inspected using the conventional Eddy Current method because it is an effective technique for assessing the serviceability condition of the tubes. The inspection detects corrosion, pitting, cracking, erosion, and other changes to both the tube’s interior and exterior surfaces. Eddy Current Array is also an efficient and effective option, although this is only suitable for non-ferrous materials, such as stainless steel. Another advanced inspection method available is Near Field Array, which is an efficient and effective option for finned-tube carbon steel.
Eddy current testing is a specialized NDT method, and the technicians at Applus+ are certified in accordance with ASNT and are experienced in performing this technique. With our support, facility owners and operators are equipped to make informed decisions regarding the maintenance and continued operations of their assets.
Besides being a global leader in NDT, Applus+ offers a wide range of solar services including solar consulting, solar testing and inspection, solar engineering, and solar quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) for PV projects.
