Our actions aimed at protecting the environment focus on minimising our own carbon footprint and increasing our resilience to issues relating to climate impacts. Applus+ sets about achieving these goals in varying ways, which are available in detail in the 2021 Integrated Report.
During the past year, we have successfully exceeded our defined environmental objectives, reducing the intensity of emissions per employee by 9% and grown our electrical energy consumption from renewable sources to 70%, a much higher level than our set target of 20%.
We have committed ourselves to the SBTi (Science-Based Targets Initiative) in order to progressively reduce our emissions to achieve the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement, of limiting the planet's temperature increase to 1.5ºC compared to the pre-industrial era. To achieve this, we have set the objective of reducing our scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% by 2024 – compared to 2019 – and to be carbon neutral for these scopes in 2023, offsetting the emissions generated, and we will also continue to aim to meet our goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
The level of excellence in our performance in areas such as leak detection, emissions control, waste management and environmental consulting all continue to help mitigate the impact of operations based on traditional energy. At the same time, we continue innovating and developing services dedicated to renewable energy and sustainable mobility, including R&D in electric mobility, storage research, property engineering, technical consulting and safety inspections for solar generation plants, wind power and the new green hydrogen facilities.
Applus+ has spent more than 10 years working on hydrogen-based projects, so we are in the privileged position of being a part of the new Green H2 projects, testing new components and materials required for their development and ensuring their safety and efficiency.
Environmental protection services, such as water management, sanitation and those aimed at increasing energy efficiency all present great future opportunities for Applus+. Our environmental, health and safety and manufacturing quality control services are growing, as society's awareness increases, and cover all types of construction and infrastructure as well as industrial and manufacturing projects.
