Applus+ undertakes an innovative environmental monitoring project for a major gas transportation company in Peru

21/08/2024

Applus+ has initiated a project that involves the operation of an integrated air quality system and atmospheric pollutant dispersion modeling, as well as a water quality and quantity monitoring system. The work includes managing 6 air monitoring stations and 16 water monitoring stations, equipped with advanced technology for real-time data transmission.

The primary objective of the project is the detection, quantification, and reporting of fugitive gas emissions using infrared thermographic and advanced optical technology. These tools allow for the visualization and quantification of emissions, facilitating the implementation of maintenance programs that reduce methane emissions and, consequently, our client’s carbon footprint.

Environmental monitoring will be carried out at various compressor plants and pumping stations located in Peru's Ayacucho and Cusco departments. The project will last for 36 months, covering intensive monitoring activities during the first two years.

This project arises from the need to comply with international voluntary initiatives such as OGMP 2.0 and the Global Methane Alliance, to which our client is committed. Through this service, a comprehensive overview of methane emissions associated with their operation is sought, enabling detailed reporting and the implementation of Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) programs.

Specific activities include the verification of safety conditions and documentation at the manufacturer's facilities, ensuring the quality of supplies. Pre-shipment inspections and continuous monitoring will also be conducted to identify and quantify potential leaks, facilitating the implementation of preventive maintenance programs.

Prior reviews and contingency plans have been established to mitigate associated risks, such as equipment failure or natural threats. Additionally, maintenance activities were planned to avoid periods of heavy rainfall in the area.

Among the expected benefits is the reduction of methane emissions into the atmosphere, improving air quality and contributing to the fight against climate change. This project will also enhance operational efficiency and strengthen our position locally and in Latin America in the emissions monitoring and quantification market.

Progress and results will be communicated through regular meetings with the client, ensuring transparency and efficiency in project execution.

With this innovative project, Applus+ reaffirms its commitment to the environment, sustainability, and excellence, offering comprehensive solutions that meet our clients' environmental and operational needs.
