Applus+ uses LiDAR technology and digital twins to inspect high-voltage overhead lines

08/10/2024

Applus+ is at the forefront in the digitisation of high-voltage overhead lines using LiDAR technology in helicopters and equipped drones.

Thanks to specialised tools such as PLSCADD and PLSTOWER, we use LiDAR data to create accurate digital twins of power grids, including both towers and conductors, as well as the surrounding terrain.

These digital models provide us with detailed information on the mechanical properties of the high-voltage lines, allowing us to know their stress states, calculate the support load trees and verify the distances to the ground or to other installations at crossings. In addition, by means of thermographic scanning we can obtain information on the transmission capacity of power lines, thus optimising their performance.

The information obtained from these calculations is particularly valuable for reverse engineering projects, such as repowering projects or near-line vegetation inspection and management projects. In these projects, the objective is to verify the condition of the line and the surrounding terrain to ensure its correct condition and maintenance, improve its capacity and obtain maximum performance from the electricity network.

Applus+ also integrates all the power line information into our traza+ platform, facilitating the comprehensive and efficient management of power line maintenance.

Applus+ develops projects that contribute to optimising the use of power lines, accompanying our clients in the new needs arising from the energy transition, such as the electrification of industry and transport and the increasing implementation of renewable energies.
