Inspection at sea: successful testing of offshore wind generators

13/08/2024

One of Applus+ customers, which operates a high-voltage power grid of over 100,000 km in length in eastern Germany, approached us with a technical task.

It required verification that multi-core contact connectors of the high-voltage lines from the offshore wind generators at the substation were properly connected. The challenge – the cable glands are tightly enclosed with an aluminium casting cap for weather protection, making visual inspection impossible.

How did we accomplish this? Using modern digital radiography.

Applus+ testing technology proved effective for this inspection. Extensive test inspections had already been carried out last year in collaboration with the customer at the Delmenhorst facility to ensure the effectiveness of this testing approach. To avoid the complex hazardous material declarations for isotopic working equipment in maritime shipping, the inspection was carried out with the 370 kV X-ray flash generator XRSA and the digital storage foil system HD CR 35 NDT Plus.

To start successfully, we exchanged all necessary documents and certificates with the customer before the maritime deployment.

Over two days, a transfer ship brought our inspector to the test site in the Baltic Sea. There, all conductor contacts required by the customer were systematically X-rayed.

The evaluations of the digital images were carried out by the customers themselves in this case.

The customer is so satisfied by Applus+ performance that they have announced a permanent collaboration for future and follow-up orders.
