The main activity of the Galician Society for the Environment (SOGAMA) is to manage and treat the urban waste produced in most of the Spanish region of Galicia. Within the framework of this activity, SOGAMA has awarded Applus+ the service of macroscopic characterisation of waste contained in general household waste (black bag in Spain) and the waste corresponding to organic urban waste (FORSU, its acronym in Spanish), which is treated in the composting plant. These activities will be carried out in the Environmental Complex and the Areosa Warehouse, respectively.
The process of macroscopic characterisation consists of manually separating the various materials present in a sample of 250 kg of urban waste, dividing them in various categories (organic matter, paper and cardboard, light containers, glass, metals, textiles, bulky items, cellulose and others) in order to discover their composition. This type of characterisation makes it possible to know the degree to which citizens separate this type of waste in their homes and place it in the correct container. This information is valuable to adapt the campaigns to raise awareness and educate citizens about sustainable management and the circularity of urban waste.
