SOGAMA awards Applus+ the characterisation of waste stored at the Environmental Complex and the Areosa Warehouse in Cerceda, Spain

16/07/2021

The main activity of the Galician Society for the Environment (SOGAMA) is to manage and treat the urban waste produced in most of the Spanish region of Galicia. Within the framework of this activity, SOGAMA has awarded Applus+ the service of macroscopic characterisation of waste contained in general household waste (black bag in Spain) and the waste corresponding to organic urban waste (FORSU, its acronym in Spanish), which is treated in the composting plant. These activities will be carried out in the Environmental Complex and the Areosa Warehouse, respectively.

The process of macroscopic characterisation consists of manually separating the various materials present in a sample of 250 kg of urban waste, dividing them in various categories (organic matter, paper and cardboard, light containers, glass, metals, textiles, bulky items, cellulose and others) in order to discover their composition. This type of characterisation makes it possible to know the degree to which citizens separate this type of waste in their homes and place it in the correct container. This information is valuable to adapt the campaigns to raise awareness and educate citizens about sustainable management and the circularity of urban waste.

The department of Environmental Inspection of Applus+ in Galicia is in charge of this project, which encompasses several tasks that include:

    • Weekly, monthly and annual planning of the characterisations to be carried out.
    • Establishing the specific field sheet format for characterising organic urban waste, which will identify the main relevant categories.
    • Carrying out 244 annual macroscopic characterisations of general household waste (black bags in Spain).
    • Carrying out 52 annual macroscopic characterisations of organic urban waste (FORSU).
    • Weekly reports detailing the results obtained in the characterisations.
    • Quarterly reports detailing the work carried out.

The services were first provided in February 2021, and the total length of the contract is 4 years.

The professionalism demonstrated by our teams in previous successful projects for this client weighed significantly in their decision to award this contract to Applus+, together with other assessment parameters contained in the tender. In addition, the vast experience and training of our technicians in the service provided allows us to meet the requirements involved in projects such as these with effectiveness and excellence.
