Applus+ bets on the IEC-61850 Standard as the standard for communications at power substations

19/01/2022

With the aim of adapting to the latest trends in the market, Applus+ carried out a training programme for the IEC-61850 standard during the last quarter. Thanks to this training, a technical team of over twenty professionals at the company, whose current jobs are related to protection, control and measurement systems at power substations, Smart Grid, electric vehicles and renewable energies, will be able to provide services to our clients with the highest degree of specialisation and accreditation.

The IEC-61850 standard defines the communication protocols between different teams located at substations. It represents the present and future in the telecommunications area, with several operators already considering it a necessary standard in the short and medium term, even though only a small number of companies have staff currently trained in the standard.

Before the existence of this new regulation, organisations around the world have used different protocols to provide communications between their systems and maintain their infrastructures operating. The aim of the IEC-61850 standard is to unify these protocols and improve the automatisation of power substations, integrating the equipment of various manufacturers and boosting interoperability thanks to using innovative technologies that will make it possible to reduce the associated costs and improve the commissioning and maintenance processes.

One of the characteristics of Applus+ is that it adapts to the different needs of the businesses it operates in, by developing various training programmes such as this one, which will allow the company to have its own experts in the new operating principles of the automatisation systems of power substations, allowing us to service our clients with all the potential of this standard.
