Applus + advises the Brazilian industry to become more energy efficient

14/03/2019

Applus+ carries out World Bank-funded energy consumption study in Brazil, generating energy-saving recommendations.

Applus+, through its Qualitec brand, was selected by Brazil’s Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (EPE) to carry out a study into general aspects of energy and production across several segments of Brazilian industry.

The chosen segments were aluminium, cellulose, paper, steel, ceramics, food and chemicals. Applus+ was charged with undertaking a study to provide the authorities with key data on energy usage, both electrical and thermal, in these industries.

Applus+ began by forming the study sample by identifying a number of representative companies in industries falling within EPE’s remit. Then, through more than 130 field visits, the team went on to gather detailed information including process descriptors, efficiency estimates by energy service, details of the most energy-consuming equipment and opportunities for energy savings.

On the basis of all of this information, the company put forward a series of improvements and technologies that could feasibly be implemented in the industries in question. It also defined the technical, economic and environmental impact of the proposed solutions. The project ran for more than a year, between April 2017 and November 2018.

Thanks to this project, the Energy & Industry Division is helping to improve the energy efficiency and productivity of Brazilian industry. This will offer long-term benefits to the sectors involved in the study as well as to the wider Brazilian population.
