The Energy & Industry Division of Applus+ awarded contract for quality-control testing of new emergency exits in tunnels of high-speed Vitoria-Bilbao-San Sebastián line

    Applus+ Norcontrol, in partnership with local company Euskontrol, recently won the contract to provide materials’ quality control services for the project to build new emergency exits in the tunnels of the high-speed Vitoria-Bilbao-San Sebastián line (Vitoria-Bilbao stretch).
    This quality-control testing contract, which was awarded to Applus+ by Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (ADIF), a state-owned company responsible for most of Spain’s rail infrastructure , marks the company’s first involvement in the construction of the “Basque Y”, a high-speed rail link between the main urban centres of the Basque Country.
     
    Since November 2001, these works have been delayed and suspended numerous times, resulting in the need to bring safety standards in the tunnels into line with the new European requirements that have come into force during this extended period.
     
    This project involves the construction of seven emergency escape tunnels ranging from 70 to 1,400 metres in length and lying parallel to the main tunnels, as well as a series of interconnecting tunnels spaced at maximum intervals of 1,000 metres. The tunnels will be lit, with 5.3 m and 3.5 m vehicle gauges so as to allow access to emergency vehicles.
     
    The works are due to last 18 months.
