The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2024 serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the Earth's ozone layer. At Applus+, we are committed to safeguarding this natural barrier through our diverse range of services to improve air quality, from advising organisations on sustainable practices to monitoring and reducing harmful emissions.

The Automotive Division plays a key role in environmental preservation. By closely monitoring vehicle emissions, we help control the release of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). We also ensure that air conditioning systems in vehicles do not leak refrigerants, such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which can have significant environmental impacts. Furthermore, we improve engine efficiency and maintain anti-pollution systems, like particulate filters and catalytic converters, to reduce harmful emissions.

The Energy and Industry Division has a broad portfolio of services focused on monitoring, controlling and ensuring air quality. We advise organizations to implement more efficient production strategies and models to reduce harmful gas emissions from their industrial activities and processes. Our professionals have extensive experience in carbon management consulting, emissions quantification, carbon footprint calculation, and decarbonisation strategies. We have recently strengthened our commitment to protecting air quality through our involvement in various global projects, such as managing the maintenance of environmental control equipment at Endesa's thermal power plants in the Balearic Islands contributing to the implementation of a Low-Emission Zone in Valencia, or implementing and operating real-time environmental monitoring at El Dorado International Airport in Colombia.

The Laboratories Division supports environmental protection through comprehensive material and component testing. We operate a global network of advanced testing facilities designed to simulate a wide range of environmental conditions. This includes assessing the effects of corrosive gases on materials, which is essential for developing solutions that minimise environmental impact. Our technicians also conduct tests for accelerated ageing under xenon and ultraviolet light to evaluate how long-term UV exposure affects materials. These rigorous evaluations ensure that products meet high standards for durability and performance, aligning with broader environmental sustainability goals.

The IDIADA Division ensures that none of its equipment contains gases that contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer. All the refrigeration and fire-extinguishing systems of Applus+ IDIADA are free of Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS). This proactive approach ensures that our operations remain environmentally safe and compliant with global regulations aimed at protecting the ozone layer. Additionally, our colleagues have implemented robust protocols for the ongoing maintenance and monitoring of their facilities: they regularly inspect all systems to prevent leaks and ensure they remain free of harmful substances. The IDIADA innovation teams also research and develop new, eco-friendly technologies that replace outdated systems reliant on harmful chemicals.

Through emissions testing, sustainable strategies and eco-friendly technologies, our company actively contributes to protecting the ozone layer and promoting environmental sustainability for a safer future.
