International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Yésica Míguez finds stability and colleagues at Applus+

03/12/2024

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we are thrilled to share the inspiring story of Yésica Míguez Vázquez, an Applus+ employee with intellectual disabilities who works at our vehicle inspection centre in A Sionlla, Santiago de Compostela, Galicia (Spain). Yésica joined Applus+ in 2017 after completing a practical training. Her daily tasks include maintaining the cleanliness of the station, managing cleaning supplies and assisting her colleagues.

Yésica's journey with Applus+ has been transformative.

“Emotionally, it has been very good for me because now I feel productive. I really enjoy meeting people and am delighted to be able to work alongside them. Many times, customers who already know me also greet me. My experiences in other jobs were nothing like this one, I felt more isolated within the company. For me, this is the best job I have ever had, and the best company”, she says, also highlighting the economic stability her job provides.

Yésica’s positive experience highlights the importance of our inclusive work environment, fostered through Son Capaces, the Applus+ programme that has enabled individuals with intellectual disabilities to secure meaningful employment with us over the past 23 years.

This initiative, carried out in collaboration with FADEMGA foundation, offers participants support as they integrate into their work environment, along with training to raise awareness among their future workmates. Manuel Carrillo García, the Coordinator of Employment and Training at FADEMGA in the region, plays a significant role in this effort. “Son Capaces showcases how inclusion can transform lives, offering people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to access dignified employment while bringing new perspectives, boosting creativity and strengthening teamwork”.

Yésica exemplifies the importance of Applus+ diversity programmes. By fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce, we enrich our organisational culture and create a more empathetic and supportive company.
