The SBTi initiative has verified Applus+ scientific goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050

In February 2022, Applus+ joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which comprises over 6,000 companies worldwide. This collaboration with leading organisations aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through science-based target setting.

By joining SBTi, we established short-term reduction targets for 2030, in line with the ambition to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. These targets have been validated by SBTi. Additionally, we set a long-term goal to achieve net-zero emissions throughout our value chain by 2050, following the SBTi Net-Zero standard. By reaching this goal, Applus+ will become a net-zero emissions company, minimising emissions throughout the value chain and offsetting any residual emissions that cannot be completely eliminated.

These commitments allowed us to be part of the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign and UNFCCC's Race to Zero campaign, which brings together entities from around the world to achieve complete emissions elimination by 2050.

In August, the SBTi initiative verified Applus+'s scientific goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. SBTi's net-zero certification is the first science-based standard to set such objectives for companies, in line with the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Below are the objectives that Applus+ has committed to and that have been verified by SBTi:

Short-term objectives: Applus Services, S.A. commits to reducing 46.5% of absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2030 (compared to the 2019 baseline). Applus Services, S.A. also commits to reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions, which cover the purchase of goods and services, employee travel, fuel and energy-related activities, by 27.5% in the same timeframe.

Long-term objectives: Applus Services, S.A. commits to reducing 90% of absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2050 (compared to the 2019 baseline). Applus Services, S.A. also commits to reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 90% in the same timeframe.

Global net-zero emissions goal: Applus Services, S.A. commits to achieving net-zero GHG emissions throughout the value chain by 2050.
