Applus+ in Singapore completes Southeast Asia’s first in-line subsea pipeline inspection

16/09/2024

The Gansar Project, part of the "Duyong Brownfield Modification," represents a milestone as Southeast Asia’s first in-line inspection of a 10” subsea pipeline extending 40km. This offshore inspection was conducted by Applus+ Singapore in collaboration with Applus+ Middle East, reflecting a coordinated technical effort.

Applus+ supervised the cleaning and gauging operations, which were completed successfully. The project began tendering in September 2023 and has recently been concluded, showcasing Applus+'s capability to handle complex subsea projects efficiently.

    Advanced In-Line Inspection Technology
A significant factor in the project’s success was the application of DTI Trekscan, the first free-floating in-line inspection tool designed to navigate back-to-back 1D (one-dimensional) bends at an optimum speed of one metre per second (2.2 mph). This tool is applicable in pipelines previously considered ‘unpiggable,’ expanding the scope of viable inspection operations.

The bi-directional tool employs advanced ultrasonic technology to measure the return echoes of transmitted ultrasound beams. This method provides precise data on pipeline wall thickness and identifies metal-loss anomalies with high accuracy. The high-density transducer-carrier design supports operation in various mediums, including refined petroleum products, water, and crude oils.

The inspection not only detected existing anomalies but also provided critical data for future maintenance planning. By offering a detailed assessment of the pipeline’s integrity, the tool aids in proactive maintenance strategies and risk management, enhancing overall pipeline safety and reliability.

The effective collaboration between Applus+ Singapore and Applus+ Middle East ensured that the project met high standards of execution. The joint effort demonstrates Applus+'s capability to deliver sophisticated technical solutions in challenging environments and across regional boundaries.

As the industry continues to evolve, the Gansar Project's success serves as a testament to the importance of innovative technology and cross-regional collaboration in achieving excellence in pipeline inspection and maintenance.
