Applus+ in Korea has secured a 3-year framework agreement with a major South Korean petrochemical company to inspect the interiors of 20 sphere tanks. This agreement leverages Applus+' innovative HEX access system providing an alternative to the traditional full scaffolding method for accessing work scopes.
Applus+' HEX system introduces a ground-breaking alternative access solution that eliminates the need for full scaffolding, traditionally used to accommodate personnel. By integrating rope access inspection techniques, the HEX system provides a more robust and efficient solution with numerous benefits for clients. The system features a lightweight, hexagonal aluminium trussed frame, assembled on-site and suspended using certified lifting equipment and a central rigging point.
In recent years, South Korea has experienced rising labour costs associated with traditional scaffolding inspection methods, coupled with safety concerns due to the aging workforce of scaffolding workers. Additionally, the enactment of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act has heightened legal and social responsibilities for employers regarding safety. In this context, the Applus+ HEX access system offers significant advantages.
One of the key benefits is reduced downtime. HEX access works can take half the time to complete compared to traditional scaffolding methods. The ability to perform external work simultaneously with internal work can further reduce downtime. This leads to considerable cost savings for clients, as fewer materials and workforce are needed, resulting in a cost reduction of 15–40%, depending on tank sizes.
The open design of the HEX system also improves lighting conditions and visibility, allowing for better supervision of inspection quality. Enhanced safety is another critical advantage, as the system incorporates a double fall prevention system in accordance with IRATA industrial rope access standards. This innovation reduces the reliance on an ageing scaffolding workforce and contributes to the prevention of serious accidents.
Through this contract, Applus+ in Korea will enhance client safety and efficiency, maximizing benefits through cost reduction and shortened project timelines. The HEX access system will assist major South Korean oil and gas companies in achieving better operational outcomes and sustainable development.
