Applus+ in KSA completes sewer and storm network assessment in Jeddah Historical District

01/04/2025

Applus+ in KSA has recently completed a significant infrastructure project in the Jeddah Historical District, Saudi Arabia. The project aimed to assess and provide pipeline rehabilitation solutions to the aging sewer and stormwater networks using trenchless technologies, preserving the district's UNESCO-listed heritage.

A Strategic Approach to Preserving History

The Jeddah Historical District, known for its rich cultural heritage and historic architecture, faces the challenge of modernizing its infrastructure while protecting its delicate structures. Excavation, the traditional method for pipeline rehabilitation, poses a risk to preserving these buildings. To address this, the local Ministry aims to upgrade as much of the network as possible using trenchless technology, enabling pipeline rehabilitation without disrupting excavation.

Applus+ was appointed as the specialized contractor to conduct a condition assessment of the pipelines and provide trenchless rehabilitation solutions to improve the serviceability of the sewer and stormwater networks.

     Comprehensive Assessment and Rehabilitation Plan
Applus+ undertook a detailed condition assessment of the sewer and storm networks, covering a total inspection length over 13,000 meters. The company provided thorough inspection reports and recommended trenchless rehabilitation methods tailored to the district's unique challenges.

In addition to pipeline assessments, Applus+ surveyed almost 1,000 maintenance access points per the STC25 standard. This comprehensive approach ensured that every aspect of the network, from pipelines to access points, was evaluated and documented for future rehabilitation efforts.

The project employed the latest technology in HD CCTV inspection and pipe condition assessment by the WRC (Water Research Centre) Manual of Sewer Condition Classification 5th Edition (MSCC5), thus providing the client with the overall health of the network and a rehabilitation strategy for rectification of the identified defects.

A Model for Sustainable Infrastructure Rehabilitation

The successful completion of this project demonstrates Applus+ capability to deliver inspection and condition assessment of buried infrastructure in sensitive environments. Trenchless technology will allow for essential upgrades to the sewer and stormwater systems without compromising the district's historical significance.

Through its collaboration with the key stakeholders, Applus+ has provided a sustainable, long-term solution that will enhance the serviceability of the pipelines while protecting Jeddah's architectural heritage.

This project marks an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to modernize the infrastructure of the Jeddah Historical District. It will ensure that the area can continue to meet future demands while preserving its invaluable cultural legacy.
