Morne Kuhn, Branch Manager at Applus+ in South Africa, has received recognition from Sasol, a global chemicals and energy company, for his outstanding leadership and team performance during a recent Sasol Synfuels Outage shutdown in 2024. This acknowledgment highlights Kuhn’s pivotal role in guiding the team through a challenging project that involved critical non-destructive testing (NDT) services.
The project involved inspecting 149 heat exchangers over 30 days. Applus+ in South Africa successfully met the work allocation targets despite scheduling adjustments, highlighting its technical expertise and operational adaptability.
Advanced Technology Supporting Inspections
Applus+ deployed the multi-technology instruments tube inspection equipment, which provided eddy current, remote field, and IRIS testing capabilities. This allowed the inspection, analysis, and reporting of 30,000 tubes, giving the client valuable data to guide necessary repairs and maintain operational efficiency.
Laser profiling was also conducted on reactors, pipelines, tube sheets, spindles, and other components. These measurements provided critical wear data to the client’s engineering team for further action.
Team Effort and Adaptability
The success of the shutdown was driven by Applus+’s NDT team leaders and technicians, who managed multiple teams under demanding conditions. The client recognized the team’s ability to handle evolving challenges while maintaining high safety and performance standards.
The project emphasized the importance of flexibility in scheduling and the adaptability of testing equipment to meet the client’s needs. Effective communication between Applus and the client helped achieve shared objectives, reinforcing the company’s approach to collaborative work.
The recognition highlights Applus+'s commitment to delivering reliable services that meet client requirements, even under challenging circumstances. The company remains focused on providing high-quality support across its projects.
