Applus+ KSA Participates in International Environment Day

06/06/2024

In celebration of International Environment Day, Applus+ in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia took meaningful steps towards environmental sustainability. The team at Applus+ KSA participated in a tree-planting initiative around the Applus+ materials testing laboratory at the Neom project as well as in a local commununity in Dammam following the United Nations' guidelines for environmental activities.

    Supporting UN Directives

World Environment Day, marked annually on 5 June, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Over the past five decades, the Day has grown to be one of the largest global platforms for environmental outreach. Tens of millions of people participate online and through in-person activities, events, and actions around the world.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted this year’s World Environment Day 2024 with a focus on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40% of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population and threatening roughly half of global GDP (US$44 trillion). The number and duration of droughts have increased by 29 percent since 2000. Without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.

    Applus+’ Green Initiative

Applus+ KSA’s initiative was aligned with the directives provided on the UN Environment Day official website, which emphasize the importance of small local actions to address global environmental issues. By following these guidelines, Applus+ ensured their efforts contributed to a broader, coordinated effort for environmental protection.

The Applus+ team in Riyadh organized two initiatives in the desert area around the Applus materials testing laboratory in the Neom project: Planting trees to create green spaces and improve air quality; and a cleanup around the premises to provide a cleaner and healthier environment for staff and visitors. While the team in Dahran took a trip to the local community in Dammam to plant trees. Trees help absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and provide shade, contributing to a healthier environment.

Applus+ in KSA’s involvement in International Environment Day is part of the company’s broader commitment to sustainability. As a global leader in testing, inspection, and certification, Applus+ integrates sustainable practices into their operations and encourages others to do the same.
