Applus+ in Saudi Arabia has introduced a new Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiative focused on repurposing ablution and washing water for irrigating gardens and trees in local parks and schoolyards. This project aligns with Unaizah’s ongoing efforts to become a green and environmentally friendly city, which has made significant strides in sustainability and environmental conservation for over a decade.
Unaizah's transformation into a greener city has seen underutilized farms turned into rural parks. These parks now serve as models of rural life, preserving cultural heritage while supporting biodiversity. These parks enhance the environment and improve the well-being of citizens and visitors. The natural landscape and serene atmosphere help alleviate stress and promote psychological peace, making these green spaces an essential part of the city’s fabric.
In collaboration with local schools, including the Third School in Unaiza, and the Ghadha Environmental Association, Applus’s initiative aims to further the city’s sustainability mission. Ghadha, known for its successful environmental efforts—such as the wild parks that earned a place in the Guinness World Records—has also contributed to local tree-planting projects that improve the climatic environment by providing shade and naturally cooling the air.
“At Applus in Saudi Arabia, we believe that sustainability starts with practical, local solutions. By repurposing water for community gardens, we’re conserving a vital resource and teaching the next generation the value of environmental stewardship," said Hazem Zein, Country Manager of Applus Saudi Arabia.*"This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to making a positive, lasting impact in the communities we serve."
The Sustainable Water Use for Community Gardens initiative reflects a similar focus, reusing water to support green spaces. The project is currently underway in Unaiza and will continue for one year, with potential plans for expansion to other areas. By aligning with the city's environmental goals and fostering local partnerships, Applus aims to contribute to the ongoing transformation of Unaizah into a model of sustainability.
