Applus+ delivers biodiversity studies conducting a tree census and vegetation studies in Saudi Arabia

02/10/2024

Applus+ in Saudi Arabia conducted an extensive tree census and vegetation study involving over 6,000 trees in Qiddiya, Riyadh. The main objective was to assess significant vegetation within the project site, determine its current condition, and recommend management strategies.

By conducting detailed flora studies and creating biodiversity management plans, Applus+ helped ensure that the project could move forward without compromising the region’s natural heritage. The study provided actionable insights that will guide ongoing conservation efforts, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations while protecting the delicate ecosystem.

    Key areas of investigation

The study encompassed various key investigations, including:

    • Tree identification and classification: Scientific identification and classification of the trees provided a detailed overview of species diversity in the project area.
    • Tree height and classes: Trees were categorized by height to analyze their growth patterns.
    • Stem diameter measurement: Measurements of stem diameters provided insight into the trees’ structural health and stability.
    • Life stage identification: Trees were categorized based on their life stages, helping assess the maturity and distribution of the tree population.
    • Health and quality assessment: The physiological and structural health of each tree was assessed, identifying potential threats to their survival.
    • Management plan: A comprehensive management plan focused on tree conservation and translocation strategies during the construction phase.
    • Vegetation and biodiversity management plan: In addition to the tree census, a detailed biodiversity management plan was created to protect vegetation and maintain ecological balance, including monitoring and controlling invasive species.

This biodiversity assessment adhered to the guidelines of the National Centre for Environmental Compliance (NCEC), the National Centre for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC), and the National Centre for Wildlife (NCW). The aim was to support sustainable development while preserving the region’s rich biodiversity.
